Survey of Renewable Energy systems along the Khumbu Trail en route from Lukla to Mount Everest PART I

PLEASE NOTE: THESE ARE UNFINISHED POSTS AS I ASSEMBLE MY NOTES AND COMPILE RELEVANT PHOTOGRAPHS FOR THE SURVEY.

Survey used the trail from Lukla to Everest Base Camp as a transect. Only systems visible from the trail were noted. #'s refer to GPS points taken.

Lukla: From the restaurant window you can see 2 open vacuum tube solar hot water systems with a 200 liter tank raised on a wooden stand.

#0: (No GPS point) On route from Lukla to Phak Ding we passed 2 SHW systems near the airport with separated tanks and three systems on Namaste Hotel compound.

#1: Phak Ding: Photos 6690, 6691

#2: Sunrise Lodge: 4 Open Vacuum Tube Solar Hot Water systems; Phak Ding Star Lodge: 2 Open Vacuum Tube SHW across the suspension bridge (one system has two broken pipes).

A prayer wheel turned by wind energy using recycled plastic water bottles as the blades of the windmill.

#3: Ghatte Khola 70 KW Micro Hydro Plant: Penstock Instake 800 meters up river. Also, 3 KW Pelton Wheel.

# 4: Benkar Gastehaus: PV system 4 Monocrystaline 40 W, 1 Polycrystaline 75 W? Plus SHW oppen tubes with 20 pipes.

Owner says she has had PV for 15 years and SHW for 5 years. Has had a refrigerator for 1 year now but has patchy electricity. Says solar is no problem for lights and says she has 4 12 V batteries.
